FAQs

How long will my procedure last?

The length of your procedure depends on the type of treatment. Wisdom teeth procedures typically take 30-60 minutes. Plan to be in the office for a total of 1.5-2 hours, including consultation, procedure, and recovery time. Consultations alone usually take about 30 minutes. Feel free to ask our staff about your specific appointment when scheduling.

How do we deliver IV sedation?

We start by placing the patient on monitors (EKG, blood pressure, oxygen via nasal cannula, pulse oximetry) to ensure safety. An IV is then started in the patient’s arm by their doctor or registered nurse (RN). Sedation medications are managed by the surgeon based on each patient’s health conditions and procedure. The patient usually drifts to sleep within two minutes of receiving the medication. The doctor begins the procedure once the patient is comfortably asleep. Medications are monitored throughout the procedure by the doctor.

Why do we insist on nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to a procedure with IV sedation?

Safety is our top priority. Sedation medications decrease the gag reflex, reducing the ability to keep stomach contents down. Inhaled stomach contents can be fatal. Therefore, no food, drink, gum, or mints are allowed before your appointment.

Can I brush my teeth before I have IV sedation?

Yes, you can brush your teeth, but try not to swallow any water.

What is IV sedation?

IV sedation is a form of anesthesia often described as a twilight sleep. You will not feel pain and likely will not remember anything about the procedure. Our doctors recommend IV sedation as it is the most comfortable way to have the procedure performed.

Will medical insurance cover wisdom teeth removal?

Many medical insurance plans cover impacted wisdom teeth removal. Please provide us with your medical insurance information so we can check coverage under your plan before your appointment.

What is the difference between impacted wisdom teeth and erupted wisdom teeth?

Impacted wisdom teeth are third molars at the back of the mouth that do not have enough room to emerge or develop normally. Erupted wisdom teeth have broken through the gum tissue and are visible in the mouth.
